Steel or aluminum beach cruiser frame

As a Beach Cruiser enthusiast I’m often ask about the difference between an Aluminum Beach Cruiser and a Steel Beach Cruiser. This article will highlight the differences in various beach cruisers and make some recommendations.

Years ago most bicycles were made in the United States. Beach Cruisers by Schwinn, Electra, Nirve and many others held a strong presence in the United States Beach Cruiser Market. Those days are gone.

Almost all bicycles are made in either China or Taiwan. The same plant that is making baby buggies today may be retooled and making beach cruisers tomorrow. This has had two dramatic effects on the USA Beach Cruiser Market. First, the price of Beach Cruiser Bicycles has fallen dramatically over the last thirty years when adjusted for inflation. Unfortunately so has quality. Today’s market is very much a “buyer beware” type of market and is full of bicycles that years ago would not have passed quality control standards. Part of this is due to the throw away nature of our society. Few people anticipate keeping their bike more than 1-2 bicycle seasons. Most beach cruisers will see a usable life cycle of 1-2 seasons and then set in the back of the garage or carport until discarded.

However, for those looking for quality I suggest two approaches. First, examine the welds on the bicycle. Cheaper bicycles show weld puddles at the joints and do not have the smooth fine welds made on your quality models. Second, (and maybe this is just me) I have observed that bicycles produced in mainland China do not have the same quality controls implemented as beach cruisers produced in Taiwan. Although, controversial as to the reasons I have attributed this to the relatively new introduction of the mainland Chinese to free enterprise markets. Hopefully, in a few years Chinese manufactures will implement quality controls so that all “runs” of beach cruiser bicycles will be quality controlled and not just a few. For now buyer beware.

As to the difference in steel and aluminum beach cruisers you can expect to pay slightly more for an aluminum beach cruiser. If you are looking for a light weight beach cruiser that will be rust resistant then aluminum beach cruiser may be exactly what you are looking for. People living on the beach or who take their beach cruiser to the beach regularly will benefit from this technology. The downside is that most manufactures have a far wider selection of steel beach cruisers than aluminum beach cruisers. As a result most customers who have a limited life expectancy for their beach cruiser will be happier with the greater selection of steel beach cruisers.

If it’s been some time since you’ve been to a bike shop, prepare yourself to get floored. Picking a bike from the shop is a challenge these days. The sheer varieties, styles and combinations available can confuse you. Whether you want simple, uncomplicated or super speed, just about anything is available for the picking. Among the different kinds of bikes on sale, beach cruiser bikes are probably the most loved and one of the most widely bought bikes. Beach cruiser bikes or ‘lifestyle bikes’ as they are now being called, are great for lengthy beach getaways or for short city rides. They are uncomplicated, easy to maintain and fabulous to ride. What with more and more people turning to biking for much needed exercise, bikes such as these are very much in demand. New features appear all the time and there are variations in prices. So, how can you decide on the right bike to buy? The first buying decision is regarding – not the bike – but the rider. Is the bike for a man or woman? Commonly, women?s bikes have the common drop and men?s bikes have the rigid and sometimes ugly looking crossbars. However, these days, many manufacturers have designed unisex beach cruiser bikes that pass as bikes for men and women. Generic bikes may be of standard colors like red, orange, black and Chrome. Even so, people who have certain preferences or those with handicaps may prefer bikes with a dip in the crossbar so that they can get on and off the bike without them having to throw their leg over the bike. Another important decision that needs to be taken is regarding the terrain. Will the beach cruiser ride on a hilly or level surface. Unless there is a specific purpose, there is no reason to buy a multi-speed cruiser bike. Since multi-speed bikes are difficult to maintain and assemble, these bikes may last for shorter periods too. Therefore, if you will be using the beach cruiser bike mainly for city riding, then, the better option is to stay with a single speed beach cruiser. The third decision is regarding the look of the bike. Do you or don?t you want fenders on the bike? This is a matter of personal preference. But, it must be remembered that although fenders are generally considered stylish, there are maintenance issues associated with them. Fenders should be made of hardy, durable materials. Make sure that the bike has a kick stand if you opt for fenders. Many people have the habit of dropping the bike when it is not in use and fenders cannot stand this abuse for long. On the other hand, the usability of fenders is limited as they are required only during the monsoons so that water is not thrown outwards when the tire moves. Finally, it is important to choose a bike that is of the right height for your use. One way to find out is to ride the bike before you buy. Otherwise, you will need to measure the inside of the seam of your pants and buy accordingly.

Buying the right beach cruiser

Buying A High Quality Beach Cruiser Bicycle Is Important

Anyone buying a new beach cruiser bike quickly learns that prices and quality range widely. Low-quality bikes can be purchased at any major department store or discount store, but the low-range beach cruiser bikes can provide a less fun riding experience. Many customers who opted for a low end beach cruiser bicycle find that parts fall off easily, replacing parts or getting accessories is more challenging, and the ride is not as smooth, resulting in aches and pains.

Midrange beach cruiser bicycles are often not much more expensive than a low-end bicycle, but the difference in quality can be immense. A middle range beach cruiser tends to keep aligned, rides smoothly, and is created so that parts do not fall off as easily. Plus, with a middle range beach cruiser bike, accessories and component parts can be replaced or added with little expense. Is actually makes a midrange beach cruiser far more cost-effective, since any small problem can be replaced with a part, rather than having to place the bike.

The top quality beach cruisers can still save you money over a mountain bike or other expensive bicycles. However, high quality beach cruisers make a big difference. They are far easier to ride and cause far fewer aches and pains than either the low-end or the midrange beach cruisers. In many cases, the best quality bikes are carefully made so that the bike component parts require minimum maintenance. This means that you spend less money repairing your bicycle and trying to get it fixed, which can save you both time and money. Inexpensive bikes have a tendency to have misaligned wheels and friction within the parts. This results in problems with coasting and with pedaling. The pedals don’t move as smoothly, and there are often squeaks and groans when you try to break. This simply does not occur with the higher quality beach cruisers. Higher quality beach cruisers also require very little exertion on the pedals, which can save your knees and your joints.

The main problem for many customers is they are not sure what’s the differences are between a low grade beach cruiser and a high quality beach cruiser bicycle. The first clue is where you purchase your bicycle. Discount stores and discount franchises tend to stock up on the cheapest bicycles, which are designed mainly to look attractive. If you want to buy a high quality beach cruiser that will be easy on your joints and will provide you with hours of fun rides, you want to speak to someone who is expert at the beach cruiser bicycle. For example, the friendly and knowledgeable staff at Copacabana Bikes specialize only in beach cruisers, and can help you select from the hundreds of styles available so that you select the right beach cruiser for you.

Tips on Buying a Beach Cruiser Bike

If you’re considering a beach cruiser bicycle, you may be looking for a bicycle that allows you to take leisurely rides on flat, even surfaces. After all, that’s what beach cruisers were designed for. These bicycles are designed to allow the rider to sit upright on the seat. This helps to alleviate stress on the back, which on most bicycles occurs when the rider is forced lean forward towards the handlebars. If you have a bad back or experience aches and pains when riding a traditional bicycle, a beach cruiser bike may be perfect for you.

You’ll of course notice that beach cruisers come in every sort of style, size, and color. However, besides basic style considerations, a big choice you will have to make at some point when buying your beach cruiser is whether to select a multi-speed or single speed bicycle. You should base this decision on how you will be using your bicycle. If you will be riding on sand a great deal and will be largely on flat terrain, a single speed cruiser might be right you. This is especially true if you don’t want to ride for very long periods of time and don’t have any interest in becoming a speed demon. Basic single speed beach cruisers are very simple to use, and don’t require you to think much about which gear to shift into. They have a basic coaster brake for stopping. The lack of gears ensures that sand does not cause problems for you when you are riding on sand, and as long as you don’t have great demands on your bike, single speed will generally provide you with everything you need to get from point A to point B in style.

It however, if you will be riding on hills, or if you want to ride over longer distances, you may want the flexibility of a multi-speed beach cruiser. Most multi-speed beach cruisers have three to seven speeds. Most multi-speed beach cruisers also have grip shifters, which allow you to twist the grip to shift your speed. How many speeds you select will depend on how you’ll be using your bicycle. If you will just be tackling some hills, a basic three speed bike will be enough. However, if you plan on going off-roading or want the versatility of being able to take your beach cruiser almost anywhere, six or seven speeds will be better for you.

When looking at beach cruisers, you’ll also notice that you have a choice between steel and aluminum construction. Generally, which you choose will depend on where you live. If you live near the sea or ocean, aluminum should be your choice because it will rust less in the salty ocean air. If you live somewhere where moisture not problem, you may often for steel frames, which provide a bit of a smoother ride than aluminum. Consider, too, were you will be storing your beach cruiser bicycle. If you will be storing your bike indoors, get a steel framed biked. It however, your beach cruiser will be stored outdoors much of the time, get an aluminum frame beach cruiser bike with alloy rims to prevent rusting.
